Director of Student Services Lewis to retire after remarkable career

Montreal - Tuesday, August 27, 2019

After a remarkable 52 year career in public education, including 47 years working out of 6000 Fielding Avenue for the  English Montreal School Board and the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, Lew Lewis has announced he will retire as Director of Student Services. His last day of work will be October 18.

A psychologist by profession, Mr. Lewis worked tirelessly in his role with Student Services  which promotes the continuous progress of students by helping them overcome the difficulties they meet, seeing to their psychological and physical well-being and developing their sense of responsibility, their autonomy, initiative and feeling of belonging to their school and community. The department also coordinates the special education programs and contributes to the management of complementary services in social affairs, regular and/or outreach schools by providing psychological, health, social, guidance, drug education and speech and language services. It acts as a liaison between the Board and the hospitals, community and social services centers, coordinates the work of psychologists, speech and language therapists, guidance counsellors, occupational therapists, spiritual community animators, childcare workers,  special education consultants, oral interpreters, nurses, social workers and resource people specializing in drug use.

“I want to leave at the top of my game,” said Mr. Lewis. “Life does not go on forever and I want to spend more time with my family. Retirement means you retire from work, not from life.”

Mr. Lewis has already registered for some new professional development courses. For 40 plus years he has been working out at the local YM-YWHA as of 6 am most weekdays. He intends to continue that regimen.

Joking about his name, Lew Lewis, he quipped: “My parents liked me so much they named me twice!”
